A Workshop on Integrating Genetics into Clinical Practice was conducted jointly by the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna and the Human Genetics Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in Collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This was the first time a Workshop of this nature has been conducted in Jaffna.

The workshop was attended by over 50 participants including Professors, Senior Lecturers, Consultants, and Doctors from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna and the Hospitals in the Jaffna region.

The resource persons from Colombo included Prof. Vajira H. W. Dissanayake, Professor in Anatomy & Medical Geneticist, Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo; Dr. Mrs. Subashi Karunarathne, Medical Officer in Clinical Genetics, Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Colombo; and Dr. Mrs. Padmapani Padeniya, Medical Officer in Clinical Genetics, De Soysa Hospital for Women.

The individual sessions were chaired by Dr. (Miss). Gowry Selvaratnam – Consultant Physician, Dr. (Ms.). M. G. Sathiadas – Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. K. Muhunthan – Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Dr. N. Sivarajah – Consultant, WHO Field Unit, Jaffna.

There were presentations on the burden of genetic conditions encountered in the northern part of the country by the consultants of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and the University of Jaffna including Dr. (Ms.). Ajantha Keshavarajah – Consultant Neurologist, Dr. S. K. Arulmoli – Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. N. Jayakumaran – Consultant Clinical Oncologist.

The workshop was followed by a discussion in integrating clinical genetics into medical education and clinical practice in Jaffna. Dr. K. Sivapalan (former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Jaffna) and Dr. S Balakumar (The current Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Jaffna) both stressed the need for promoting and strengthening genetics education and practice in the region.

Excellent arrangements for the workshop were made by the University of Jaffna, under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vasanthi Arsarathnam, by a team consisting of Dr. (Ms.). Sivananthini Uthayakumar, Dr. (Ms.). S. Ambikaipakan, and Dr. T. Chenthuran of the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. The inauguration of the workshop was attended by Dr. S. Nanthikumar, Deputy Direct, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna who has provided invaluable support for the workshop to be a success.
